The difference is that in boxing it's that the fighters have been trained since they were 7 to box. In MMA, as long as you're in your 20's and you're tough you can be taught a few ground moves and be a half-decent fighter.
In boxing, it's a boxer who commits crimes. In MMA, it could easily be some criminal who just happens to hold his own outside of the bar.
