The myth that people lived better lives before technology is perniciously influential; the fact (as attested by studies of groups making that transition out of this state) is that violence in such societies is endemic, life expectancies are short, and women are little more than chattel.
This doesn't mean that contact with more technologically advanced societies aren't cataclysmic experiences in which these peoples are to various degrees exploited, killed, or enslaved, but that is an unfortunate commentary on human nature in general rather than any sort of recommendation for a primitivist way of life.
