Don't waste your money on a mini. The creative labs one has an extra gig of storage and is cheeper. If your don't want that, shell out for a 20 gig player of whatever brand. They're not that much more money, or physical size, and the increase in storage is huge.
Minis are made for rich people who don't have the music collection to need an MP3 player but just want a cool lookin toy.
Also stay away from the shuffle, its the worst player on the market.
The iPod Mini 6GB has an extra gig of storage then the Zen Micro that's currently available and if you get the educational discount its the same price. Plus the battery life is superior on the Mini and iTunes is better then WMP or the software included with the Micro.

As for who minis are for, not everyone needs to have 20GB of music at their disposal. You can get by with 6GB of music at one time. For some people, physical size is more important then hard drive size.

As for the shuffle being the worst player on the market, that's a load of crap. Testing has shown it to be among the best mp3 players on the market when it comes to audio quality. Yes, it lacks a lot of features but it plays music and it plays it well. If you're updating the music on your player everyday, which is incredibly simple on a shuffle using iTunes, you don't need a 20GB mp3 player. And if you don't care what song comes up next on your player, who cares if it has a screen? There are plenty of times you're listening to your mp3 player and don't bother to look at the screen. The shuffles controls are so simple that you don't have to look at it to be able to control it.
