Luckily for me, I prefaced my post with "There is a story..."
It's fairly common knowledge how distorted things get when passed along by word of mouth.
The details may be inaccurate, from one telling to the next, but the basic premise remains: the person doing the casting found his "perfect American" in a guy who turned out to be fiercely British.
