I'm hesitant to enter into this debate, which I take to be about how you treat people who come to your door, and not about Mormon doctrine per se. But I think it's worth saying one thing:
I suspect that many of the people who claim they have/will do all kinds of rude and cruel things to Mormons at the door are engaging in a little bravado, emboldened perhaps by anonymity, the internet, etc. In my experience most people (especially Canadians) are polite in most situations. I've often thought about being rude to telemarketers, door-to-door missionaries and so forth. I've even fantasized about great "zingers" that I could throw at them to really hammer home the point that they're annoying me.
But in reality? I've never done any of that. I always just listen politely, say I'm not interested, and close the door. Most of the time I even wish them luck, and once in a while express sympathy for how hard their job is. The truth is, I don't have the inner meanness that it would take to actually attack another person verbally, even a stranger. I suspect that's true for a lot of people.
But what people actually mean when they say "I'd do this and that to a Mormon if they were at MY door" is this. It really is annoying. Even for 15 seconds. We wish they wouldn't do it.
I don't think that's a crime.
