Default Bonsai Trees

So, I have recently moved into a reasonably nice place and while on an adventure to find plants to find plants to make it look respectable I have developed a fascination with Bonsai Trees. I would love to start growing one but I don't have any real experience with growing plants. I am hoping that somebody who has some experience could offer some insight into the matter. I live in Victoria and have a bright place that receives plenty of light primarily in the afternoon/past mid day.

Are they difficult to grow? Remember I am currently inept when it comes to plants.

What kind of bonsai would you recommend? I plan on growing it indoors so I would like something that can grow capably indoors. Again I don't have any experience with bonsai's but I do believe I am a reasonably capable person and certainly have the desire to put in the effort to learn.

For you bonsai experts are there any websites or books that you would recommend as a primary source for myself?

I am not completely adverse to growing one outdoors but I don't really know the benefits of indoor vs outdoor. Its something I somewhat expect me to put a reasonable amount of time and energy into.

Anything else I am forgetting that I should be aware of?

What kind of time commitment am I looking at here?
