Another reason for the anti coffee sentiment is the fact that it prevents you from getting adequate rest for your body. Another scripture encourages us to essentially go to bed early and arise early (no one really pays much attention to that though). So coffee is considered bad because it "tricks" your body. Energy drinks create the same affect, but I haven't seen anyone with any authority talk about them in the mormon church. I'm sure they'll be something said about them eventually.
I don't claim to be a perfect mormon. Generally we are encouraged to try our best. Try to live a Christ-like life. Doing so perfectly is of course impossible. We are not perfect beings. I'm content with the fact that I'll make mistakes throughout my life. There are a lot of mormons who are obsessed with keeping up appearances of being "perfect". These people are generally depressed as they'll inevitably "fail" every day of their lives.
Mormons wish to share their beliefs as they sincerely believe that it is the true church on earth. There is no hidden agenda beyond that. So I would just be kind to them and kindly decline if you are not interested.
The way I see it, the purpose of life is to seek out happiness. If someone finds that in the Mormon church or wherever else (as long as it isn't illegal or infringe on the rights of others). I think we should respect that. Do Mormons have a monopoly on happiness? No.
