Not a fan, but "simplicity" is not necessarily a bad thing. Too many bands add complexity for complexity's sake, and it doesn't work. Radiohead is an example of this imo. Don't get me wrong, they are a good band, but to me the complexity borders on pretentious. Not all the time, but some of the time.
I think often a mark of talent is to be able to use simplicity and still be unique. I look at a band like Nirvana. Their songs were very simple yet they were vastly popular in both the top 40 and "alternative" circles.
