Well, yeah, I suppose that is a point but the entire process of the surgery seemed quite un-needed because we know he lives so there is no real danger. I guess the illness could have been to illustrate how bad an idea it was for Jack to leave the island but we've laready established throughout this season and the end of last that it wasn't going to work out for him.
Last night's episode was pretty good, again I feel like it didn't have that "something" that earlier episodes this season have ("The Constant") ... but it was very interesting. Ben's sure not too happy right now and I have to wonder if Jack is capable of making an intelligent decision at this point - my assumption with Lapidus leaving the satellite phone was so that the 815ers would be able to track the freighter folk rather than because they want to be followed ... maybe I'm not understanding, though.
