Could Widmore be one of the original Blackrock crew? That might explain why "the island has always been his". Perhaps Jacob is another member of the crew. I believe Widmore knows about Jacob, that is why (? Miles - the ghost guy ?) was sent on the mission. Ben is a key Widmore needs to get to Jacob IMO.

I think Ben and Widmore go back before the blackrock crew, I think Ben's story about his dad and growing up on the Island was a bit of a fabrication.
I'll be willing to bet that in the last year they'll show the black rock washing ashore and having to deal with another group of others under Ben, and another crew from another ship trying to get Ben and kill the survivor.
I also believe that Hurley is the third piece of the game players with Charles and Ben, he just doesn't know it yet.
As far as Jacob goes, he's probably the manifestation of the Island and the prize that you have to get too.
