A wedding anniversary lunch at a west-end restaurant ended in tragedy Wednesday when a 77-year-old man was attacked and stabbed to death shortly after he finished the meal with his wife, CTV News has learned.
The couple were celebrating their 29th anniversary at the Royal Fork Buffet restaurant in the area of 149 Street and 100 Avenue just before the incident, police said.
The couple left the restaurant just before 4 p.m. As they got in their car in front of a busy shopping mall, an assailant attacked the elderly man and stabbed him in broad daylight.
A family friend said the victim, who was not been identified by police, was a harmless man who didn't deserve to be on the end of this senseless attack.
"(He was a) very nice man, he had a big heart, he was very kind, loved his wife immensely, it's sad," Donna Phillips said.
Police Insp. Terry Rocchio said the man died after being taken to the University of Alberta Hospital.

I just saw this on the news tonight. Pretty big WTF?!?

An elderly man is going home with his wife after their anniversary, and someone just runs up to him, and stabs him??
They are looking for a white male, so this probably rules out any gang initiation ritual.
