Most songs by Great Lakes Swimmers are pretty melancholy. Their sound is pretty sparse, with lots of reverb (Tony recorded his first album essentially solo in a silo). Often been compared to Nick Drake, and Neil Young (After the Goldrush era). They played in Calgary a few months ago with Justin Rutledge and jokingly billed it the Magical Misery Tour. Suggested songs:
Moving Pictures, Silent Films
I Will Never See the Sun
Various Stages
Song for the Angels
I also find Tournament of Hearts by the Weakerthans to be pretty sad.
Also a classic from the Jam - The Bitterest Pill.
If I'm feeling nostalgic for home, I find that The Green Green Grass of Home always brings a tear.
