I agree with taking "References Available Upon Request" off your resume as it is implied that you need at least 3 references before applying for a job. However, you shouldn't include these on your resume but have them with you when/if you go for an interview.

I've seen references on absolutely terrible resumes and I looked at those names and thought "Why would you give this idiot a reference?"

That's another point that should probably be made. If you agree to be a reference for someone, you are legally required to give them a good reference. Think carefully before you agree to be someone's reference.
