Ok, my rare serious answer.
Dinner and a movie is usually pretty lame because every guy thats probably asked her out has done the same thing.
You shouldn't be afraid of going to a place where you can talk, awkward silences and conversation lapses are going to happen whether its your first date or your 10th date. Of course the whole third date awkwardness where you grab your shoes and dive out the window should cure any conversation problems that you have after she tries to carve a pentagram into your chest with a ball point pen (Don't ask).
The former Mrs. Crunch and me took a long drive up to Banff for dinner on our first date, we got some time alone in the car, had some nice scenary to look at, had a great meal, and then had options after the dinner to go up the gondola, or take a hike or whatever.
You need to know what she likes, if you've known her for three months before you asked her out, you should have a pretty good idea about her interests. take her to a pub to play darts. Or take her to the zoo to look at monkeys as they go at each other while you waggle your eye brows at her.
One of the most fun first dates I've ever had was when I lived in Texas, we took a walk to the park, got a couple of hot dogs, and spent a couple hours in the sun people watching (I was in college and on a budget)
But a dinner and a movie. All that happens is you end up talking about the movie like a male and female version of Siskel and Ebert.
Be creative, find a nice cozy off of the main street place to eat with a unique menu and a good wine list.
Or go drive around in go-carts, make it look like you have actually put some thought into it.
From the book of the newly single guy.
