I'd suggest a 3. I have yet to have my door damaged. The paint is a little thin yes (kinda bugs me) but otherwise, not a single complaint. I've had the recall done, and the sticker is on my door letting all know that hitting the door in the right spot will not get an open door, but will set off an alarm instead. The Proteges are great too. Not as much power, but handle quite well from what I've heard, and the initial depreciation is bigger (that may seem like a con, but in my opinion, it means that a 6 year old Protege won't be overpriced whereas a 6 year old Civic might be, and a 6 year old Corolla definitely will be). As long as you don't look at a car as an investment (which nobody should really, that is NOT what they are) then you should be good.
