I liked that they're showing Ben being evil and Widmore being good, then vice-versa.

Arguments are made why each of them put the plane at the bottom of the ocean.

I'm inclined to think Ben actually put it there. Biggest reason is why would Widmore purchase a 777 with his own company? It's too easy to track. Combine that with the fact that Tom said it was a sham company yet the purchase order reads "Widmore Industries" which is a legit company as Desmond has been in a Widmore Industries building.

As for the gun, do we know that it was the same gun that Michael bought, or simply a plant Tom gave him?

It was an interesting episode. I never really thought about what exactly Micheal would do once he left, how exactly would he re-enter society?
