Based on what you have said you are looking for, I would strongly suggest looking at a Mazda 3.

While I will admit the fuel mileage in the city isn't as good as I was hoping (I seem to get around 450 in the city) it is fantastic on the hi-way. On top of that, I have been impressed with the amount of car you get for the price you pay. I bought an 05 GT (Manual Tranny) for about 16k and have really enjoyed it so far.

Solid vehicle, amazing amount of head room, nice nice ride, solid amount of options, just well thought out really.

My only gripe with it is it seems the paint is a tad thin.
