No need to get stupid about it. There is about 1% of the population that will change their opinion on something like music after an initial impression so trying to convince people to like something based on musical ability or any other reason is completely pointless. i think troutman is the only person I have ever known to actually continue to listen to new music after the age of 35. I mean really new music, not the new album from Metallica, challenging yourself to listen to stuff you believed was crap, like rap or country or dance or electronica. I know I don't have it in me (time or effort) to try to like that stuff but I am pretty sure its not because the music sucks, its because I suck.
I started to like Radiohead in my early twenties, in University and now it is nostalgic to myself just like Fully Completely is to some people. Radiohead is definately not new, hip or cool to me so thats why it is a bit insulting when some say that people listen to it to be hip and cool.
I hate when anyone looks down on anyone for liking or disliking any music, yes, including Britney or Nickleback. Doing so indicates close-mindedness on that person's part.

Liking something created by someone else increases your personal contribution to society by JACK-SQUAT, so bragging about a favorite something is ridiculous.
Listening to music is like masturbating, it is something done to pleasure our self and no one else, but for some reason it isn't cool to put your masturbation collection of crusty kleenexes on display in your living room like some sort of look how cool I am trophy.
