Some awesome mentions in this thread. Would have to agree with Yes, (fragile is a killer, killer album) Zappa, Dire Straits, Steely Dan, and David Bowie's material will always be relevant and influential.
I would have to say out of the classic rock bands not mentioned... Mahavishnu Orchestra and Mountain.
