Well i live in Calgary and work in Vancouver for 2 weeks of the month. I have places in both cities and i am not sure how much better it is in Vancouver...certainly if you are younger (no kids) the rental situation is better, as there is lots to choose from (quantity here not quality)..you can expect a one bedroom basement suite near UBC to be around 800 bucks a month...(again nothing nice, but livable)..Vancouver allows home owners to rent out basements, so there are alot of places that do...but the quality isnt great...you can find some decent apartments on the west end of under a 1000 bucks...
If you have kids and require more, than you are stuck out in Pitt Meadows, South Surrey, Surrey or New Westminister....
