This is an argument I hear a lot, and since you bring it up, I want to ask about it. It's often used as code for fiscal responsibility, but businesses often operate in the red for years in anticipation of future windfalls. Businesses also tend to be run autocratically and not democratically, and are concerned only with profit as opposed to governments, which it seems to me ought to be more interested in providing services in exchange for the taxes we all pay.
So, I guess what I'm asking is: in what important way is government like a business? It sounds kind of like saying "government is like a car." It sounds good, rhetorically it may have some power, but it just isn't a good comparison.
