It is called Gematria. If you add up the numerical values for the letters spelling Caesar Nero in Hebrew, it adds up to 666. This was a symbol for the beast in their day who persecuted the early Christians in horrible ways. Any educated Christian knows that, and also knows the Book of Revelation is not a map used for predicting the end of the world. Jesus said the end would come like a thief in the night when we least expect it. The Christian belief is that we don't know when it will be, and so there is no point trying to predict it with silly ideas like a universal currency being a sign.
That said, there are uneducated crazies of every sort, religious and otherwise that may believe all sorts of things. There is also a lot of money to be made by selling apocalyptic theories. I don't expect the industry to go away anytime soon.
