Not true at all, 50-100 years ago, even 1000 or 2000 years ago, people who were determined could still get their message across through indoctrination, false-hope, propaganda, prophesizing, scare tactics con games, etc... It's human nature that makes certain people suceptible. If anything, the internet is the tool that allows people to see more than just that narrow message and avoid these pitfalls that lead to the creation of conspiracy groups, cults, new religions, religious mania, etc.
