There has never been any debate about full sharia law. The Sharia courts would be more or less limited to family law matters. Similar courts had been running in Ontario for both Jews and Catholics for decades. The potential Sharia courts were strongly opposed by various feminist groups. The end result was that all religious courts were banned in Ontario. Not sure what the status is in the rest of the country. You can still get parts of Sharia law through arbitrators though. This requires both parties consent ahead of time. Also, the arbitration cannot result in anything that would illegal. ex. cutting off people's hands.
