I thought those times were time of day, not necessarily a count up from zero. So, in the time it took to send the payload, the 'island clock' was 31 minutes slower than the 'real world clock'. Which is all fine and good, but this type of phenomenon is hard to describe in any reasonable scientific way, which is unfortunate that it seems some of the other island phenomena will be explained away by 'magic' (or Star Trek physics).

As mentioned, this accounts for Walt getting older relative to the islanders. It also accounts for Richard being relatively the same age now as when he met Ben as a boy. If Ben has traveled off the island since he was a boy, he would have aged, and Richard not nearly as fast. Also, Penelope Widmore looked OLD in the video transmission Charlie saw.

Does anyone remember if Jack's ex-wife looked much older in Jack's flash-forward?
