- IF he won this term then Romney would run against him next term and lose BUT THEN he would have it wide open for the term after that. Someone is supposed to always step forward as a motion of respect to run against the incumbent, just as McCain did to Bush.
- More likely, IF he losses this term then next term is far more interesting and Romney is a favorite to take an eraly lead in the primaries.
Point being, it is a decent strategy on his part. If he goes and losses a big battle now it is more likely dirt is flung at him that sticks, that he makes a big error he is remembered for and/or he is labeled a loser/old news, etc.
