Yeah, like Mel said, it just doesn't happen often enough to justify having a crap load of plows and salt trucks on standby. There are a few, don't get me wrong, but its not enough for a city of this size.
I left for work this morning at 4:45am, I didn't get to work till 5:30, the trip from my house in North Van to my work just outside downtown usually takes me about 15 minutes with no traffic. The roads were pretty bad, even the highway was just covered in the white crap.
You Calgary folk may laugh at us, and I understand, but its just something that we aren't used to, as it never happens. There was a couple winters like 5 years ago or so where there was barely any flakes, let alone accumulation of snow.
As far as the schools being closed, I got no issue with it, why send thousands of people out onto the roads when it is truly dangerous to be out there. And SFU being on a freeking mountain doesn't help either.
