I thought they tried to make them look scary and no, it wasn't all that scary but I thought it was still effective enough. Will Smith was great in a very challenging role, the effects and how they made New York look empty was unreal and there was some great scenes of huge tension. The scene where he goes into the wharehouse after his dog and we didn't know what was inside was truly scary.
