Same thing happened to me a while back. When I phoned to inquire about the price of replacing it, they wanted several hundred bucks.

I'm a cheap ass and my car is probably worth about the same they wanted for the mirror, so I didn't really want to shell out the money. Instead I just got some industrial strength glue and glued it back in place. I left it drying with a contraption similar to your tape job for a couple days, and it was as good as new... or close enough. I've been driving that way for a couple months now and haven't had any problems.
