I'm a Linux geek, but know nothing about PS3. Wikipedia has some relevant things to say : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_for_PlayStation_3

So due to some hardward related stuff, you can't take advantage of the full processing power available.

I did a brief look for YDL downloads, didn't see an obvious link on the website. The link is somewhere though, as they are legally required to make it available for free (the sources at least), so somewhere you can get it.

As for Ubuntu, there is http://psubuntu.com/

My own reaction to this is that unless you know why you want to install Linux on your PS3, it may be more frustrating that it is worth (having no experience myself with this, it just seems it may get tricky). If you want to learn something new and play around with Linux, it would be easiest to play around with an older PC you have lying around (last 10 years). Just my thoughts. One great thing you'll find is that there is likely a large, active, supportive community to help you out.
