Yes there are some programs where they breed them to release them into the wild, but theres also programs where they are bred solely to be sent to other zoos. yeah it's real humane to inbred a species on the verge of entinction so we can keep them alive for our entertainment.

A zoo is essentially a jail for these animals, you can make it all nice and comfortable like we try and do but no matter how soft the lazy boy and big the plasma TV it's still a prison and just like you wouldn't i don't think these animals would volunteer to be there.
I think you'd find that most animals in zoos were born in captivity and have no real hope of surviving on their own in the wild. Some animals come to zoos due to injury or due to human familiarity such that they are a danger to themselves and humans in the wild. Some of the most endangered animals may be brought to zoos to be saved as part of conservation programs.

For the large majority of zoos, gone are the days of a healthy animal actually being removed from the wild just to be put in that zoo and serve no other purpose.

Personally I love zoos and love bringing my kids to the zoos. It serves as way to teach about the animals and teach them to respect animals. Some zoos are good and have very nice environments and some are not so great but also tend to be working on improving the enclosures. Recently went to the Cologne and thought it was beautiful and very well done. The elephant enclosure is massive and something to see (it allows the herd to live in its natural hierarchy apparently).
