That I can agree with. Hitchens is clever and funny, but that's not at all the same thing.
As much as I hate to admit it, some votes have to go to Harold Bloom for this one--a very influential if aggravating thinker. I'd also second Eco, though he's a bit of a dillettante, and dabbles a bit too much to be a true genius IMO.
