Once your done under there, look for 2 black rubber stoppers (looks like rubber bolts)...1 at each corner of either the hood or the corners of where the hood sits. These are adjustable. Screw both of these in 1 turn apiece. Once you have done that, put some oil on the latch mechanism and close the hood normally. You shouldn't have to slam it. The hood should release with no excessive force. Hope this helps. If it does help, you may need to adjust those rubber bolts so the hood doesn't wobble (too loose). Good luck

Thanks. I managed to get it open by hitting it, but Ill take a look for those rubber stoppers too to try to avoid having to beat the car whenever I want to get under there.
