One theory I've always maintained is that if a treaty nation decides to hold an illegal blockade, or some such to "protest" some slight, that the government simply declare them in violation of said treaty, and tear it up. Say goodbye to your special status.
Of course, we all know how well that would work for the government...
As much as this is obviously nothing more than futile grandstanding, I have to say I respect the Lakotas far, far more for using this tactic than I would some of our native tribes who prefer to risk the lives of innocent people while sabotaging train tracks, etc.
That said, I fully expect to see this headline on CNN shortly: "In response to the declaration of independence by the Lakota Indian tribe, a US State Department spokseman was quoted as saying 'ROFL'."
