I've only read a very little about Machiavelli, but from what I've read it seems as though there's an element of luck added to the game. If true, this takes away from the true beauty of the game.
I play a lot of email diplomacy through the DPjudge. You can use this to create private games as well, thus eliminating the need for someone to handle the details of the game. It's all computer adjudicated.
