Diplomacy is great. If you ever have the chance and especially if you are interested in Italian history, try Machiavelli. It is a more complex version of Diplomacy, as if the makers of the original game just read The Prince, and re made their game. As you say it's tough to get 7 players to finish, we have played Machiavelli via email one move a week. It worked okay, need a neutral person to handle details. The conniving and backstabbing reached epic proportions when you have a week to scheme.
