The store I mentioned earlier sells dry denim. Mainly Earnest sewn, but also gets other brands.
I wouldn't recommend dry denim to someone just getting into higher end jeans. they can be pretty complicated, and if you're used to wearing standard levi's or GAP jeans, many won't realize why the hassel.
There is also the need the size down on many brands, due to stretching.
I'm a lurker on superfuture... I agree there are many people who take their jeans/clothing real seriously.
For a decent brand of jeans for someone just getting into higher end jeans. I would recommend Mavi. they're not too expensive (usually around $100), are decent quality, and arent too flashy as some higher end jeans can be (read: pocket details, fades etc)
