Try out Adrenaline Sports, I just picked up a new pair there about 3 weeks ago and they were the best place I went. I hit up 4 different sport checks, 2 Sportmarts, Sport Swap and Canadian Tire. Each of the places I went had decent skates (Canadian Tire did not have anything even mid-quality, all the men's skates were low end brands and less than $100), all the prices were similar though, only Adrenaline Sports had employees that knew anything about skates.
Basically they were the last place I went, and the only one I walked out of satisified with. They ask you questions about how you skate, how you tie your laces, and try to recommend 3 skates that should fit you based on your answers. My problem with Sport Chek was that I couldn't find a skate that fit properly. 9 was too big in the toe, 8.5 was too small in the width. Adrenaline pulled out an 8.5W (
yes they make skates for wider feet now) and they fit perfectly. They also punch out any uncomfortable parts in the skate, and heat mold them to your foot (depends on the skate as some can't be heat molded) They sharpened them and sent me on my way with a new pair of skates.
Punching, molding and sharpening are all included in the purchase price and you have a comfort guarantee (can't remember the time length), where you can bring them back in and they will try to punch out areas that rub, or remold the boot.
