I see alot of adults, including adults who tie thier kids skates, tie them badly. They should be tight all the way up but not overly tight across the middle part of your foot, as it tends to flatten out the bridge of your foot and cause pain. Also, they should be tied all the way to the top hole, but not tight enough that it restricts the blood flow to your foot, or you'll end up with alot of pain from that as well.
Of course you're allowed to tie your skates and wear whatever size you want, but from a comfort perspective, tieing them improperly can be a big source of problems. You'd be amazed at how many 5 year old kids playing minor hockey are almost in tears wearing skates cause mom or dad tied them WAY to tight...
