Here is an excellent piece on the acoustics of helicopters, which briefly talks about the NOTAR system used on the MD500 HAWC1.

Virtual noise means that, even if a helicopter is very quiet, some people are disturbed by just knowing that one is in the neighborhood, and concern over safety is often raised as an issue. The ultimate case would be a completely silent helicopter whose pilot could be accused of hovering outside your bedroom window.
EDIT - Oops typo on my part, we have the 520 - the 500's are the standard tail rotor version ('Littlebirds' in Blackhawk Down)
