The recycling facility in Airdrie has a 'take it or leave it' area for things like books and magazines. I'm not sure about any such place in Calgary, but I'd be willing to bet it does.
You should try donating the NG's to the Rockyview hospital. When I was in there last November suffering from a gall bladder attack, the only thing the nurse could find was a petroleum engineering magazine. I swear that that bloody mag bored my pain away. I'm sure future patients there would be happy not to have to read that...
