He's going to get his cash anywhere. That's not a huge issue. However, if he goes to Boston and wins a ring it does nothing to change the perception the public has of A-Rod. They've won without him before and will probably win in the future without him as well.

Even worse, if he went there and they didn't win it. That would firmly entrench him as a play-off loser/non-preformer.
From the Red Sox point of view, if they do this then their would be no doubt that they are every bit as bad as the Yankees when it comes to overspending. (Not that there should be any doubt now, but some seem to think otherwise.) Also I am not sure that their fanbase would be all that happy with the move. Obviously temas have to do what they think is right from a baseball perspective and not a fan perspective, but with the team they have I am not sure it would be worth it to take the chance and add A-ROD. Again if they did and din't win the fallout would be huge for both parties.
