SABRES SURPRISE THEMSELVES
Gerber and patchwork blueline beat the Habs
Things weren't looking good for Buffalo as they headed into a matchup against the always strong Habitants without blueliners Robyn Regehr, Scott Niedermayer and Jay McKee and with Wade Belak and John Michael Liles also banged up. Things got worse when prospect Maxim Kondratiev was delayed getting out of Rochester, leaving the team with only 4 healthy dmen Cory Sarich, Mark Eaton, Lubo Visnovsky and newcomer (and former Sabre) Shawn Heins. Things got even worse when Visnovsky was lost to injury.
The team received a yeoman effort from Sarich , EAton and Heins and moreso backup tender Martin Gerber who kicked aside 30 shots for the win. Gerber is now 6-5 on the season and is one of the league's top backups.
The Sabres were paced up front by Nils Ekman and Ziggy Palffy, and find themselves 3 points out of a playoff spot. Despite the injuries Sabres are 8-2 in their last 10.
Interesting rumours out of Buffalo have the Sabres dealing as many as 2 star players and multiple prospects in attempts to secure some healthy blueliners and forward depth. Server problems have put any future deals on hold, however.
