Example say the Jets buy out Cajanek after the trade deadline because they want him off the books next year and were unable to move him at the deadline. In order to make sure it doesn't cost them next years cap they have to buy him out before their season ends so Mike decides to do this. If another team wants him he'd be put up for bid after the deadline?
