If I was a parent, I would talk it over with my child, and let them know that this sort of act is too serious to write off. I would make him/her turn themselves into the police, and realize that these kind of dispicable acts cannot be tolerated, even if a family member commits it.
Sheltering your kid when they commit this sort of crap is, IMO, the absolute wrong thing to do. It gives them a green light to do it again.
