First of all, most of my friends treat people equal. Meaning the same. Meaning we don't go out of our way to determine ethnicity in order to decide how we plan on interecting with somebody.
Secondly, I have seen first hand that mistake being made. My friend who is Japanese and I were having dinner in Chinatown. One of the waiters came up to our table and asked in Chinese "Is XXXX your father?" (Father is one of the 50 Chinese words I happen to know from my childhood friend being Chinese.) My Japanese friend looked puzzeled, so I responded in English "No, my friend is Japanese." The waiter appologized and walked away. A short time later, our own waiter asked if I spoke Chinese, and I explained that I knew a few words. He laughed because he said his friend was not expecting the white guy to understand him but the asian guy to not.
