Napoleon Dynamite was dissapointing not because it was a bad movie, but because it could have been so much more. There is so much to play off of in the ironic hipster department, and in the end, it really just went half-way.
I dunno, maybe its the fact that is about 2-3 years behind the times, but the movie seemed like an MTV job where they set out to do a hipster movie because that's been the latest rage. And when you get corporations doing takes on some form of cultural movement.....all the traits and lingo are there, but whats missing is authenticity that gives it street cred. Even though this wasn't really a corporate job, it felt like it.
In the end I have lots of friends who loved it, but I can't really say I recommend it. Although the visuals built around this movie are great, and those I can.
I'd much rather watch Harold And Kumar....definitely not as stylish but in the end, a very underated, and more importantly, better, movie.
