If its a senior stick, you may not need the butt end (unless you're tall, I guess). Try to minimize the use of the butt end if possible as it screws around with the flex!!!
don't use an open flame unless you absolutely have to...if you do, make sure you don't stop that flame unless you want nice scorch marks or worse on it...if you've got a heat gun or ultra-high-powered blow dryer kicking around, use that. it works amazingly well

as for the flex...for every inch you cut/add to a stick, i believe it adds 3 or 10 flex to the stick...i can't remember which though
