Default Aebischer "back"up...Again!

David Aebischer is back in San Jose, and again he'll be looked upon to backup the young Peter Budaj. He apparently liked it so much the first time he spent a little while here he thought he'd try it again, and hopefully for a bit longer this time. "I think I was only here for about a week last time, but it was by far the single greatest week of my life!" he exclaimed. "I didn't even get to play a game in teal before, so I can't even imagine what my experience will be like now!"

Of course if history repeats itself, we can tell him right now what his experience will be like this time around - quick and painful. Gerber was brought in to share duties with Budaj and lasted all of one game. After watching his new goalie give up 5 goals in his first and only game as a Shark, RT had seen enough and looked for the earliest exit out of that situation.

Breakin' it Down
To NYR:
Martin Gerber G, 32y 77ov

To SJ:
David Aebischer G, 29y 76ov
1st round pick (Phi)

At first glance it may seem a bit steep to get a 1ov upgrade in Gerber, but even though he's 3 years older, he has a much better chance of keeping or possibly even raising his OV next year and will likely play more games than Aebischer. Hopefully Aebischer can make the most of his supposed "last chance" and play well in Phoenix this year, but with that team in front of him it's unlikely.

For now though, it's a very small downgrade to my backup goalie and I get a pretty good pick for a deep draft. Works for both quite well I think.
