Basically you have 4 choices.

1. Flash memory based player. No moving parts, great for active playback (workout or jogging or whatever), limited by memory (usually 128MB - 1GB).

2. Disk based MP3 player. Either a CD player that plays MP3's burned onto a CD or a Sony MiniDisc type player. CD player with MP3 playback can be super cheap. $40 - $200

3. Small HDD based player. 1-5GB hard drive in the player. Super small but enough storeage to store weeks worth of music.
